His Hands, His Feet...by Melody Bridges (El Salvador)

Matthew 25:35, 36
                For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.  I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.

               Last night the kids at the transition houses went with us to feed the homeless.  If you have never been able to do this with Sus Hijos, let me explain how it works.  It costs around $200 to make 140 bags of food.  This includes a lunch meat and cheese sandwich, an apple, bag of chips, juice box, cookies, and napkin.  We all work together to make these 140 bags of food to hand out. 

                After we make the bags we all climb into the back of Kurt Ackerman’s truck, which has seats and handrails just for this purpose.  It is usually a tight squeeze and last night was no exception.  The bags of food are placed in the center of the truck.  We also had a few clothing items to give out.  Then Kurt asks who would like to pray.  We pray over the food, that our hearts are open, and for the people that will receive it. 
                We drive through the city of San Salvador in a route that has been mastered over the years.  The people come quickly because most of them recognize the sound of the truck.  Most are grateful and some even tell us God bless you before we can say it to them.  This is one of the most life changing experiences you get to have serving here.

                I can only imagine what went through the minds of our kids as we served last night.  Some of the young people we saw on the streets came from the same centers as our kids.  Some of our kids have family that have lived on the streets.  I am often heartbroken when seeing what life is like for them.  Glancing at a few of the faces of our kids last night, the tears pouring out indicated that they also felt heartbroken. 

                Our kids are some of the most giving people I know.  They don’t have much, but they will share it with others freely.  I pray that they learned last night another way to help others in their own city.  I pray they are encouraged to continue in their education to be able to help others.  They are the ones that can make this city a better place. ​
