Pastor Gerhard Lewerenz (Germany) - Refugee Ministry

Pastor Gerhard Lewerenz has been in the ministry for over 40 years and pastors a church in Ludwigslust (Fels in der Brandung e.V.). He also hosts 4 to 6 youth conferences each year for the youth of Germany. These conferences are a time set aside for encountering the presence of God and learning more about Him. About five years ago, when the refugees began coming to Germany by the thousands, Pastor Gerhard's ministry began to change and he started a branch of ministry dedicated specifically to the refugees.
Pastor Gerhard and his congregation reach out to the refugees by taking in those who are in danger of being sent back to their country, which could lead to torture or death by ISIS or other Islamic extremists, and they give them church asylum. By giving them church asylum, they provide them with housing and food, assist them with paperwork and take them to appointments and interviews. They also reach out to other refugees by providing food and clothing, assist with paperwork, teach them about Jesus (many are baptized) and they help them attend conferences to grow deeper in the Lord. They also provide transportation to their church, if they do not have a church in their city providing interpretation for them.
In the future, Pastor Gerhard hopes to acquire a new building so they can hold more people during church services (their church has grown significantly since the refugees began coming to Germany) and have more space to take in refugees who are in danger and need church asylum. They are a small church right now and space is very limited.
